A graduate in Economics who went on to postgraduate study in law and in cyber law, Amitesh Kumar entered the Indian Police Service through the Union Public Service Commission examination of 1995 and was allotted the Maharashtra cadre. His first field years were spent in Solapur district, where he was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1997.
Early district service is where an officer learns the mechanics of the job that no later rank replaces: registration and investigation, the handling of law and order on the ground, and the daily management of a police station's relationship with the people it serves.
